Today September 8th is: International Literacy Day Established by the UNITED NATIONS
to encourage universal literacy, this day has been observed since 1966
by all countries and organizations that are part of the United Nations
system. It was a direct outgrowth of the World Conference of Ministers
of Education in Tehran, Iran, which first called for the eradication of
illiteracy throughout the world. Observances are sponsored primarily by
UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization) and include the awarding of special literacy prizes.
Prizes are also awarded by the International Reading Association and
the Japanese publisher Shoichi Noma to literacy programs that have made
a significant difference.
For example, in 1984 the Noma Prize was given to the Bazhong
District in the People’s Republic of China, where the literacy rate had
been raised from 10 percent to 90 percent over a 35-year period. From Holidays, Festivals, and Celebrations of the World Dictionary |
Quotation of the Day
|
Education Thomas Jefferson "If a nation expects to
be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never
was and never will be. The functionaries of every government have
propensities to command at will the liberty and property of their
constituents. There is no safe deposit for these but with the people
themselves; nor can they be safe with them without information. Where
the press is free, and every man able to read, all is safe." from Respectfully Quoted
